Maggie Shaw has studied food and cooking as a public health intervention extensively. Koved Care’s self-care and nutrition programs are designed to compliment clients’ work with treatment providers and Recovery Coaches. In her capacity as Chef at Koved Care, Maggie uses cooking to help clients reframe nourishment as a more thoughtful, intentional act of self-care rather than a mechanical process. Maggie uses cooking to teach clients about time management, executive functioning, sequencing, resiliency and social skills.
Meal times act as powerful anchors in the day to help clients build out constructive routines and establish better time management. Meal planning, preparation and execution all help clients to develop executive functioning and sequencing skills, and if things go awry in the kitchen Maggie’s support provides opportunity to build resiliency and problem solving skills. Cooking and grocery shopping with Maggie’s support lend themselves to positive social interactions and better social skills. Additionally, cooking for friends and family allows clients to create or strengthen relationships. Most importantly, with support from the treatment team at large, all of these skills translate into healthier living and higher self-esteem in other areas of life.
